SJC Boxing Club in Fort Myers, Florida, has become a beacon of hope for local youth, transforming lives through its comprehensive mentoring program. Under the guidance of founder and Florida Boxing Hall of Famer Steve Canton, the club offers more than just boxing training; it provides a nurturing environment where young individuals can develop discipline, resilience, and a sense of community.
The program, initiated in partnership with the Lee County School District, has expanded significantly since its inception. Starting with just three students from one school, it now serves over 261 students from 57 different schools across the region. Participants receive academic tutoring, physical training, nutritious meals, and mentorship from professional athletes and business leaders, all at no cost.

The impact of the program is evident in the personal stories of its participants. Braydon Stewart, a 15-year-old who joined the gym to combat depression and anxiety, has found solace and purpose through boxing, achieving a seven-fight winning streak. Similarly, Mario Nunez overcame personal struggles, including depression and alcoholism, through the support of the gym and now mentors younger members like Arbon Kurtishi, who credits boxing with helping him cope with the loss of his father.
SJC Boxing Club's commitment to fostering positive change extends beyond the ring. The club's inclusive approach ensures that all youth, regardless of their background, have access to resources that promote personal growth and community engagement. As Steve Canton aptly states, the true measure of success lies not in producing champions but in guiding young individuals to become confident, responsible members of society.
For over 50 years Steven Canton has operated the longest continually operating boxing gym.
